Firstly it is great that you have considered to try Yoga, you won’t look back! The idea of starting out at first seems so daunting, especially with so many styles of Yoga out there. I always say if you are starting out you want to make sure you attend a class that is aimed specifically at beginners, the styles best suited for this level are: Hatha, Iyenger or a therapeutic style of yoga. After you attend a class it is down to the teacher to make an observation and advise you after your class on the level that they see you benefiting at.
Priority is given to those who have purchased class packs or book onto a course as most classes do get busy. Although if you cannot commit every week you do have the option to attend as a drop-in.
Wear light clothes that you feel comfortable to moving in. If possible, avoid any clothing that is constrictive as well as obscuring your alignment, I need to be able to observe your body's movements.
No, you can borrow a mat. If you then decide that you want to continue with yoga; for hygienic reasons it is advisable that you buy one of your own. I also provide other yoga equipment to suit your needs and practice.
Yes! Yoga has been placed with such an awful stereo-type, I have so many people laugh at the thought of doing Yoga because they assume you don’t do anything. Throughout a yoga class you are constantly moving and resisting against your own body’s weight which generates a fantastic cardiovascular work-out and also strength training to build muscular-tone. Believe me when I say you will never need a gym-membership again!
No! I hear this one all the time. Yoga can be started at any age and holds many benefits for the ageing process. Some of these benefits include: Increase in mobility – Reduction in arthritic pain – Increase in cardiovascular health – Reduces muscle wastage – Peace of mind and much more.
Yes! You are actually the perfect candidate for Yoga. Firstly Yoga is NOT all about flexibility, this is just one of many added benefits that Yoga brings with practicing. I always enforce that everyone who practices Yoga are not naturally gifted with flexibility or the ability to do it, all of the benefits come with time, guidance, patience, dedication and practice, practice, practice!
This Question is always dis-heartening to hear. Yoga is an ancient practice that to our record was formed 5000 years ago in Indus Valley, India as a practice predominantly performed by men. Since its move to the west it has endured severe stereo-typing which has resulted in many men feeling intimidated or self-conscious about starting Yoga altogether. Yoga is growing dramatically in popularity with men recently thanks to its rising presence within the sporting and military industries. I have men attend my classes frequently.
There is no set rule for how many classes you should attend, even If you decided to come-along to just ONE session a week you will still feel the benefit. I always advise to never let Yoga constraint you, it is always advised to do it when you feel like it. However, If you want to get the best out of your practice and develop into your postures specifically, I would suggest to attend 3 classes a week.
For those students who are new to yoga, or have limited experience, l would like to emphasise the potency of its methods. Rapid changes in the body and mind are soon experienced and benefits appreciated when all of the techniques are harmoniously combined. This is not so apparent when the various practical techniques of yoga are practiced in isolation with one another. If you are used to more superficial techniques of exercise, you may find the POWER of these changes initially more than you expected. It is NOT unusual for beginners to experience at different times any or all of the following: headaches, aching muscles, nausea, anger, grief, breathlessness, confusion and tiredness. These are symptoms of physiological and emotional discharge or detoxification. Some kind of discomfort is unavoidable once we start to purify our systems through yoga and we should be encouraged rather than discouraged when this occurs, in other words it’s a GOOD thing try to embrace and go with it. It is simply a question of toxins (and emotions) being released from adipose and organic tissue into the blood, from where it is brought to the skin to be expelled. In the case of tiredness it is due to the releasing of muscular and nervous tensions, which habitually mask feelings of chronic tiredness. BUT… the good news is equally you can expect to gain rapidly from the following physical and psychological benefits; flexibility, strength, respiration, digestion, elimination, vitality, alertness, concentration, tranquillity, self-confidence and self-esteem. In short the greater fitness, better health and increased capacity for happiness can lead you to a richer life. If your muscles ache the next day, the fastest way to relieve this is by doing whatever postures you can remember from your last practice. Try to do this everyday.
Back pain can have many causes, from a simple muscle strain to infection or other potentially serious conditions. It is important to know what is causing the problem, so first consult your GP. He or she may suggest a treatment plan, or may decide that you need to be referred to a specialist for further tests or treatment. When any medical treatment is completed, you will be encouraged to continue the improvement with a suitable programme of personal back care. Leading health professional agree that the best treatment for most back problems includes regular appropriate movement. Yoga offers gentle guided exercise, as well as the added advantage of relaxation and stress management. For your safety and in order to continue your progress, it is important to attend classes on a regular basis with a teacher who has specialist back care expertise. If you have a back-pain or discomfort on a regular basis please do contact me to inform me of the nature of your back problem and any medical or other treatment (chiropractic, osteopathy, etc) that you have received or are receiving so l can suggest the most helpful class for you. In most cases, l will recommend booking an initial Consultation and Assessment, to assess the situation, as it may be necessary to start your practice on a one-to-one basis a minimum 6-week programme is recommended. After your programme I will then be able to guide you appropriately and safely, as well as recommend which Open Class to attend. If you have any other medical conditions or are pregnant, please check with your doctor before attending any yoga practice.
